That tree had stayed at the same place for decades, and had
been a witness of life and death. It retained vivid memories of everything that
had happened around it since its birth.
Back in those days, its size was only of a few centimetres.
Even when it was just a sprout, it felt deeply the hot summer afternoons and
the joy it experienced when it got its tender leaves warmed by the shiny solar
beams. At that time, a boy and a girl hung around that pasture. They used to
run blissfully over the grass, roll down the hills, and, in summary, enjoy
together a naïve childhood.
Their growth was unequal. Whereas the tree, few years later,
was only a fragile stem with thin branches and tiny leaves, the lads grew up
astoundingly fast. Not only they stayed together, but also their relationship
tightened up by each passing day. The plant witnessed their elusive peeks:
yearning his, cautious hers. It beheld their first caresses, their first hugs.
It attended their first kiss. The night when they dared to neck, they did it
under its leaves. At all those moments, it shared with them their joy and
happiness.
Somehow, they eventually grew attached to that small tree
that brought them back so many memories of their childhood. One day, he arrived
to the meadow holding a penknife, willing to engrave the initials of them both
on the tree’s slim trunk. She refused, claiming that it was still too young and
he could hurt it irreparably. He then suggested to wait and, under that
condition, the three of them accepted that tacit vow.
Years passed, and the young couple got married. The ceremony
took place inside a huge tent which sheltered the various guests, the consorts
and their arboreal friend, whose highest branches already reached the tent’s
roof. The tree spent the night in a festive atmosphere, surrounded by people
and by the joyful couple who didn’t move more than three metres away from him
in any moment.
When they decided to build a house, they both agreed to have
it edified by the side of the tree. By the time they got it finished, the tree
had completed its growth, even if it would still increase a lot in size both
lengthwise and sidewise. Fulfilling their promise, he carved on its trunk two
tiny letters, an S and an E, interlaced in a heart-shaped symbol as a sign of
everlasting love.
They both endeavoured devoutly to look after the tree. Every
morning, she got up at dawn in order to water it; every afternoon, he climbed
its trunk in order to prune its branches. They ended up to be an extremely
well-assorted couple, which they attributed to a mystical blessing originated
by the tree. When their first child was born, they had it baptized before it,
ritual which they repeated with the ones who followed him. The family used to
have dinner under the shade of the tree’s branches, and to sit around it to
chat, but the descendants never felt the same affection towards the tree as
their parents did. As time went by, they grew older and abandoned their home,
leaving their parents with their everlasting friend.
Time took them its toll. She contracted a respiratory
disease which hindered her to breathe. With time, she throttled inside the
house. Since she couldn’t stay there, the tree became her new home. For six
months, one of its roots held the cushion that she used to relieve her illness.
After that, one of its branches held the rope that he used to relieve his pain.
The tree shared the grief of the couple’s loss with their offspring. Endued
with a superhuman wisdom, it forgave the punch the firstborn wielded against
it, result of a primitive despair.
From then on, the tree lost every single contact with human
beings. It heard them from afar, in their city of smoke and metal, as a sound
which wasn’t noisier than a botfly’s flutter. Somehow, it felt alone; nearby
insects and plants were a more monotonous company than his human friends’.
Furthermore, during the last years, it had realised that many of its dendritic
mates had been disappearing recently, without really knowing why. Therefore, it
experienced a huge joy when, one day, it saw those men approaching him. It was
so happy…
It felt its conscience vanishing when the saw pierced its
body.

Recuerdos
